President Obama may be the most public baseball fan in the first family, but it was first lady Michelle Obama who was on the field before Game One of the World Series, honoring America's veterans.

Classical music education will get some welcome attention next week when Michelle Obama opens the White House for a special concert. Next Wednesday, the first lady will host a Classical Music Student Workshop Concert, which will feature an appearance by superstar violinist Joshua Bell, guitarist Sharon Isbin, cellist Alisa Weilerstein and pianist Awadagin Pratt. The afternoon concert, which will be held in the East Room, is part of the White House's ongoing Music Series, which was created by the first lady to celebrate the arts and demonstrate the importance of arts education.

Security was extra tight at Yankee Stadium last night as first lady Michelle Obama and Vice President Joe Biden's wife, Jill, attended the World Series opener between the Yankees and Phillies. Snipers patrolled the roof behind the bleachers in right-centerfield. Helicopters hovered above the stadium before the game. Metal detectors were used to screen well-heeled fans entering the pricey Legends Suite Club and again outside seats on the first level of the stadium.

First lady Michelle Obama shook hands with wounded veterans and handed them goody bags stocked with New York Yankee caps and teddy bears in a visit to a Bronx veterans hospital before taking in Game 1 of the World Series. Mrs. Obama was joined by Jill Biden, wife of the vice president, and baseball officials on the New York visit. The first lady has been a vocal advocate for veterans and military families in the nine months since her husband became president.

Americans love soda, or pop, as it is called in some parts of the country. The love affair is one that is helping produce overweight and obese children, as a recent study by the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research (CHPR) and the California Center for Public Health Advocacy (CCPHA) points out. Perhaps there is a lady, one important lady, who can help Americans fall out of love with soda. A recent Grist post called first lady Michelle Obama the “most influential voice on food policy in the country.” While speaking to 400 employees at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) last week, she mentioned the importance of eating healthy. “Little changes make a big difference,” Obama said, including “switching from soda to water.”

First lady Michelle Obama will attend Game 1 of the World Series between the New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday night. Mrs. Obama's office announced Tuesday that she will be joined at Yankee Stadium by the vice president's wife, Jill Biden. Major League Baseball is dedicating Game 1 to veterans and their families. Both Mrs. Obama and Mrs. Biden spend time visiting with military families and talking about the sacrifices they make for the country.
